p.s. If anyone isn't familiar with Harvey Milk and wants to know more, here's my letter to the editor (edited by our liberal local paper, but it still gets the message across):
Seeking governor's vetoPublished by The Reporter Posted: 09/13/2009
Harvey Milk was not a hero. He was a sexual predator, a pedophile and a liar. In a favorable biography of Milk titled "The Mayor of Castro Street," author Randy Shilts wrote about Milk's numerous relationships with teenage boys and that Milk also advocated having multiple sexual relationships at one time. For years, Milk publicly claimed that he had been dishonorably discharged from the military for being gay. He later admitted his lie, but felt his lie was justified. As Shilts wrote: "He had not suffered this disgrace, he told a later campaign manager, but he knew the story would make good copy. If anyone said something to Harvey about his fondness for such stunts, he would gesture wildly as he launched into a lecture.'Symbols, symbols, symbols,' he insisted. Sure, he had not been kicked out of the military... The point of the story was to let people know that service people routinely do get kicked out. "Besides, he once confided,'Maybe people will read it, feel sorry for me, and then vote for me.' " California's Assembly just this week passed SB 572, establishing May 22 as Harvey Milk Day in California schools. The text of SB 572 states that "On Harvey Milk Day, exercises remembering the life of Harvey Milk, recognizing his accomplishments, and familiarizing pupils with the contributions he made to this state" shall be conducted; specifically, "all public schools and educational institutions are encouraged to observe ... and ... conduct suitable commemorative exercises." Is Harvey Milk the kind of person we want our children to learn about in school? Do we want children to be taught that adult-child homosexual sex is OK? Do we want our children to be taught that telling a public lie is OK if it gets you what you want? I for one do not want my children learning about this dishonorable man (and his lifestyle) at school. During the next six weeks, Gov. Schwarzenegger will either sign this bill into law, or veto this horrible bill. For the sake of California's children, please contact the governor and let him know that Harvey Milk Gay Day is not needed or wanted in the schools.
