When Rachel was walking home from school on Thursday, she and her friend found 3 baby birds that had fallen out of their nest. One was already dead, but Rachel ran home to tell us about the poor birds, and Lyrad later went with her and Josh to bring home the 2 birds in a box. They dug for worms (and later bought night crawlers at a pet shop to keep up with the birds' demand) and roly-poly bugs and fed the birds throughout the day all weekend. Josh named the louder bird Squirrelly, and the more lethargic bird was named Fluffy. But by Saturday, the birds' personalities had "switched" and by Sunday morning, Squirrelly had died. Rachel buried him in the backyard in the bird grave we already have out there (made by Josh, after a bird flew into our window and was lying dead on our back porch). Fluffy is doing well and is in a box in the bathroom now. The first few nights, the bird(s) slept in Josh's room next to him. He and Rachel were awakened EARLY by the squawking. Lyrad has fun helping them with the birds. What a wonderful Easter weekend activity for Rachel and Josh, as we celebrate "new life"!
