After a long search, we finally found a house that we're all excited about. It was built by a homeschooling family with 10 children, so it is very practical with lots of rooms. Each of our children will have their own room and the girls will each have their own bathroom! Crazy, but it's only for one year. If they don't keep their own rooms and bathrooms clean, we can go back to having only 2 bathrooms next year!
While in Texas, we visited our friends we knew in Guam -- they've gone from 4 kids to 8 kids since we saw them last!
We visited our friends from England, who thought they were moving to Texas for only 2 years. They're still in Texas 6 years later!
Live crawfish for sale in the grocery store!

No, this is not in our new house
Lyrad and I had a 6-day getaway to Texas! Our goal was to find a house to rent, starting next month. The house I loved (from our internet searching) was taken just hours before we went to see it. Our next favorite choice was also taken just before we tried to get an application in for it. So the search wasn't as easy as we'd hoped, as we drove around different communities, searched online, compared school rankings, talked to ward members in the area to get their opinions, and dealt with the unexpected (see next post for details). The people in Texas were so nice and helpful and the area was beautiful, and the schools will be incredible (especially compared to the schools in CA that are struggling with budget cuts). The (Texas) high school marching band placed 9th in the whole nation last year! Eliza and Madi might try out for it. Rachel can take yearbook, newspaper, drama, marching band, etc, in middle school. There will be some less pleasant aspects for Isaac, such as having to take the freshman history (geography) class in order to graduate. (It wasn't required here in CA.) When I asked Isaac what he's excited about in Texas, he didn't want to say much. His reason: "If you have low expectations, you won't be disappointed." Once when I called home from Texas, I told Isaac to look up on the internet a high school we were considering. Later he told me, "Okay, Mom. We can go to that school. I looked at their cheerleader website and I approve." (he was just kidding, of course -- he judges a school by the AP classes it offers, NOT by the girls!) We're very sad to be leaving California with its wonderful ward and friends and relatives nearby, but we're getting excited to experience life in Texas. Anyone we've talked to who's lived in this same area of Texas has only good things to say about living there. And we were impressed with Texas, too!
